Will We Colonise Titan?
July 18, 2017
Saturn’s largest moon Titan has the energy resources to support a human civilisation the size of US, a new research suggests.
Titan is the sixth ellipsoidal moon from Saturn. Outside of Earth, Titan is the only other planetary body in the solar system with actively flowing rivers, though they are fed by liquid methane instead of water. Clouds condense and rain down on the surface, feeding rivers that flow into oceans and lakes.
WHAT DID RESEARCHERS FIND?
Saturn’s moon Titan has enough energy to house a colony of 300 million people, including options for nuclear power, solar power, wind power and hydropower, according to a study which offers new hope for long-term human life in space. Scientists from the Planetary Science Institute and the California Institute of Technology looked at the energy sources that could power future life on this strange planet.
WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES?
Titan is almost 10 times further away from the Sun than the Earth. Harnessing solar power using panels seem possible. As for wind power, Titan does have strong winds in its upper atmosphere. At the moment though, we don’t have the technology to build floating wind turbines that could get up that high. With hydrocarbon fuels pretty much out of the question due to the lack of oxygen required to combust them,
