Ravi Shastri Returns To Cricket As The New Coach
July 14, 2017
Ravi Shastri has been appointed the new head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team.
WHY WAS SHASTRI CHOSEN?
Shastri was involved in a three-way race along with Virender Sehwag and Tom Moody as the advisory committee met in Mumbai to select the new coach. According to BCCI, Shastri brings with him a wealth of experience, both as a player and as a coach. Also, Virat Kohli’ strong recommendation for Shastri was reportedly a factor in the ultimate decision. Kohli’s strife-torn relationship with former coach Anil Kumble was well known in the circle.
SHASTRI’S HISTORY WITH THE TEAM
It will be the third stint with the national team for 55-year-old Shastri, who was earlier a Cricket Manager during 2007 tour of Bangladesh and then Team Director from 2014 August to 2016 June during which India won Test overseas series versus Sri Lanka, reached the semi-finals of 2015 World Cup and World T20 semi-finals in 2016.
Zaheer Khan has been named bowling coach while Rahul Dravid will be batting coach for overseas tours. The term of appointments will be till the World Cup 2019.
